Copenhagen: A 3 Night Winter Wander Trip

First Day…..

Flying in from Brussels, I touched down in Copenhagen, Demark ready for three nights of Scandinavian charm with my adult son. The airport train made the journey into the city centre effortless, within less than 15 minutes I hopped off at the central station. From there, it was an easy 10 minutes walk to my homebase for the next three nights, the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel.

My days in Copenhagen quickly fell into a rhythm of wandering, discovering, and warming up with some delicous food after admiring the amazing view from our hotel city room.

We were super hungry and notice Tivoli Food Hall was just across the road. This place became one of our favourite places for lunch and dinner as the meals were reasonably prices, plenty of variety, and had that cosy Copenhagen energy.

After lunch at Tivoli Food Hall we made our way down to the first of many Lego store visits. Each one felt like a little world of imagination, and I couldn’t resist a moment on a bench surrounded by larger than life Lego characters. The first Lego store was just minutes from the Radisson hotel where we were staying and this Lego store was super busy.

Our Second Day…..

On the second day, we stumbled across Amalienborg Palace, the official residence for the Danish royal family. We were hestiant at first if it was worth paying to visit, and were very pleased as we ended up spent over two hours exploring this impressive palace. Wandering around through grand halls with some having modern art hanging on the walls, there were chandeliers dripping from the ceilings, intricate carvings, centuries of stories, and an amazing horse stable that is in use with a few rows of the royal carriages on display. It’s the kind of place that slows you down without you realising it. Oh, you have to check out the kitchen….it’s huge!

After the visit to the palace, my son and I wandered around more of the city and walking along the harbour shore where we came upon an ice skating rink called Broens Ice Skating Rink located at the Greenlandic Trade Square on Christianshavn. As it was a cold winters’ day, so we decided to skip the ice skating and instead sat under a heat lamp indulging in some steaming hot apple cider, watching people gliding around the ice-skating rink. It felt like stepping into a winter postcard.

Our Third Day……

We took a one hour canal boat tour which offered a whole new perpective on the city. Colourful buildings lining the water, quiet canals, and that unmistaken Nordic calm was magical. There are so many boat tours to choose from and at reasonable prices too.

Final Day Before Departure…..

Before flying back to Belgium, for our final day we ended up visiting the National Museum of Demark to round out the trip. With a deep dive into the country’s history and culture where we got to view viking artefacts to a collection of beautiful doll houses and other wonderful curated exhibits.

Between walks, trains, boats, and the soft winter light over the city and canals, Copenhagen wrapped me in the kind of travel experience that stays with you long after you have returned home. Share what you discovered when visiting Copenhagen.
